Welcome to the Basics of Educational Science course pages

This course is part of the EduLAB program and is worth 10 ECTS Credits. You will notice that not all EduLAB students will be taking this course since some of you have already completed this course elsewhere.

Course Objectives

  • The student teacher will become acquainted with the basic concepts, fields and current position of Educational Sciences as they are related to vocational education.
  • The student teacher will learn how to apply this information in his/her work as a vocational teacher.

Course Format

Studies are implemented primarily as e-learning (using the current systems in place for the EduLAB program including this blog) as well as through the use of Virtual Sessions via Adobe Connect.

Course Activities

The following text is a summary of the tasks you will need to complete during the course. Please look over the individual sub-pages under EduSci to learn the details for each.

Part 1. Create a Theorist’s Learning Environment (Individual Activity)

  • You will be assigned an educational theorist to research.
  • You will then have to create a visual image of a classroom environment that would have been created by that theorist for a subject that they are familiar with.
  • Individuals will share images on the blog and you will then have to guess who the theorist is for each image.
  • Final discussion and images will be shared with each other during the 30.9.15 Adobe Connect session.

Part 2. Collaborative Activity with Scottish Teacher Education Student Colleagues (Pair Activity)

  • You and a Scottish counterpart will co-create a lesson plan for use in a Scottish classroom space and context. 
  • Engage in a reflective process with your pair about the effectiveness of the lesson planned.

Part 3. Create your Ideal Learning Environment (Individual Activity)

  • Individuals will create a visual image of the ideal teaching and learning environment. This ‘space’ can be for any subject, target group and can be physical or virtual. You will need to write a reflection piece (text or max. 3 minute screencast) about your space and the theoretical foundations for why you would use such a space.
  • Be prepared to share your images during the Adobe Connect session on 3.11.2015.

Part 4. Assessment of Teacher Practice Videos (Pair Activity)

  • In pairs, you will need to choose two videos to watch from the site (It can be any two).
  • Individually, view the videos.
  • Individually comparing the two videos, answer the following questions:
    • What did you like about the practice? why?
    • What did you not like about the practice? why?
    • What theory(ies) of learning did the practice reflect? How was this demonstrated?
  • Reflect on what you saw with your pair (you can reflect together virtually on your own time).
  • Write a reflection blog post about specific aspects of the practice you observe.

Part 5. Have a debate (Group Activity)

  • Groups will research and defend a position, in debate format, focusing on one of two key concepts in use in contemporary educational practice (debates will take place during the Adobe Connect session on 4.12.15).

Course Assessment

Course participants will be assessed based on the completion of assignment tasks both group and individual. The specific instructions and assessment criteria for each assignment can be found on the corresponding pages for each activity on this blog.
